In short: Ship your drive from anywhere in Canada to our lab at 855 Alness St, Unit #20, North York, ON M3J 2X3; you pay the inbound shipping and we pay the return shipping, while GTA customers can also walk in Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Send Your Drive to Our Toronto Lab

You do not need to live near Toronto to use Prime Data Recovery. Customers from across Ontario and the rest of Canada ship their hard drives, SSDs, memory cards and RAID drives to our lab in North York. The drive is evaluated and recovered in the same lab and by the same team as drives that are dropped off in person.

How do I ship a hard drive for data recovery?

  1. Call or send a request. Call (416) 661-1112 or request a free evaluation. We ask what happened to the device and tell you whether it is safe to keep it connected.
  2. Ship the device. Pack the device as described below and send it by any courier or Canada Post to 855 Alness St, Unit #20, North York, ON M3J 2X3.
  3. Free evaluation. When the drive arrives, our engineers diagnose it and send you a quote with what we expect to recover. Nothing is done without your approval.
  4. Recovery and return. Your files are returned on a new external drive or through a secure cloud link. We pay the return shipping.

How should I pack a drive for shipping?

  • Put the drive in an anti-static bag. If you do not have one, a clean zip-lock bag is better than nothing.
  • Wrap it in at least 5 cm of bubble wrap or foam on every side. The drive should not move when you shake the box.
  • Use a sturdy box, not a padded envelope.
  • Send only the drive or device that holds the data. Keep cables and chargers unless we ask for them; for some external drives we will ask you to send the enclosure as well, because it holds the encryption chip.
  • For RAID and NAS drives, label each drive with its slot number and pack them separately.
  • Put a note in the box with your name, phone number and a short description of the problem.
  • Do not open the drive, freeze it or try to “fix” it before shipping.

Turnaround

How long a recovery takes depends on the failure: a logical problem is usually much faster than a drive that needs parts replaced in the cleanroom. You get a time estimate with your quote. For urgent business cases ask about our emergency service.

Who Pays for Shipping?

You pay for sending the device to our lab; we cover the return shipping. Insure valuable parcels with your courier.

No Data, No Fee

The evaluation is free, and if we cannot recover the data you need, you do not pay for the recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to ship a failed hard drive?

Yes, if it is packed well. Drives are built to survive normal courier handling when they are powered off and cushioned on all sides.

Do you also serve customers in the GTA in person?

Yes. Customers from Toronto and the GTA can walk in to our North York lab. See areas we serve.

What types of devices can I mail in?

Hard drives, external drives, SSDs, USB flash drives, memory cards, and drives from RAID, NAS and servers. Call us first for large systems.

Do you send a prepaid shipping label or pick up the drive?

No. We do not offer pickup or inbound shipping labels; you send the drive with any courier or Canada Post, and we pay to ship it back to you.

Do I have to pay if you cannot recover my files?

No. The evaluation is free, and under No Data, No Fee there is no recovery charge if the data you need cannot be recovered.
